Cosplaying as Inosuke from Demon Slayer: A Quick Guide
Jun 14th 2022
Cocky but lovable, Inosuke Hashibira is one of the most popular characters in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Eager, willing to fight, and with a unique, go-getter attitude, his character is likely also the focus of many a cosplayer around the country.
So if you’ve got a convention coming up or just need to be prepared, this is the place to start.
You’ll need more than Demon Slayer Inosuke’s sword, too - but we can help with that.
The Boar Mask: Inosuke’s Calling Card
Far and away, the most recognizable component of Inosuke’s “uniform” is the hollowed-out boar’s head he wears.
Fans of the show believe he may wear a boar’s head in honor of the sow that raised him as a surrogate mother. Others might say he wears it to create a more intimidating effect since that falls in line with his modus operandi as a character.
Whatever the case, you don’t need a real boar’s head to cut a convincing caper as Inosuke Hashibira, and no one will be the wiser.
Simply get a boar mask (they’re easy to find online) or create your own with wire, papier-mâché, and faux fur. It’ll take a little work but you can get it done!
No Haori Needed to Pull Off the Authentic Inosuke Look
One of the great things about Inosuke’s uniform is that he doesn’t wear a haori as a part of it, so you won’t need to purchase or create a top.
However, his cut, chiseled build is basically a recognizable calling card, especially since he always wears a mask. That might pull off a little legwork (see below).
Gray-Blue Hakama Pants
Demon slayers tend to wear hakama pants as a component of their uniforms. It makes sense; the hakama is a traditional, ceremonial garment that is functional as well as historically significant.
The hakama is typically light and airy, allowing for free and easy movement of the legs; something a demon slayer needs well.
Many traditional hakama pants are black, but Inosuke’s are a noticeable shade of grayish-blue. Still, there are no tricks here. Just get a pair of hakama pants in a matching color or cut and tailor them out of cloth.
Note: if you want to go with a very traditional, authentic approach, cut them from cotton or linen cloth. This is what hakama pants have been traditionally made from.
The Deer Fur Girdle
Another immediately recognizable aspect of Inosuke Hashibira is his deer-fur girdle.
If you have access to deer fur, go ahead and make one. You’d do better with buck-tail than with a hide, though, because the hair on his girdle is pretty long.
In a pinch, you can probably sew one using a girdle or belt pattern and brown faux fur. You might also be able to get away with trimming and painting a luau grass skirt. It all depends on how authentic you need the look to be.
There are multiple ways to skin a cat, but what you do need to do is pull off the effect - it’s no Inosuke without that deer-fur belt.
Knee High Socks and Sandals
Inosuke Hashibira wears knee-high, blue-gray socks which are apparently made of bear hide.
You can replicate this effect with a pair of bluish-gray socks that are made of cotton or wool. If you’re looking for a realistic effect, trim the tops of the socks with faux gray fur.
His socks are cut out at the toe and heel, and he wears sandals underneath them. You can probably save a few dollars by getting a pair of socks in the right color and making the adjustment yourself.
Just make sure if you do, you stitch up the edges of the socks to keep the threads from unraveling.
Demon Slayer Inosuke’s Swords: The Icing on the Cake
Most demon slayers wield one Nichirin Sword. Inosuke wields two highly recognizable katanas.
Demon slayer Inosuke’s swords are as much a component of his “uniform” as everything else we mentioned here, but his are different from those of other demon slayers in other ways, too.
Demon slayer Inosuke’s swords have chipped and gashed edges which gives them a ragged look. This is no accident, and it is not due to Inosuke’s lack of care for his weapons. It is intentional.
In his own words, he wants demons to feel that they are being “sliced by a thousand blades.” The chipped blades rip and tear demonic flesh rather than slicing cleanly through it.
His blades are not engraved, and they do not have proper hilts. Instead, he wraps the tangs in cloth to provide grip and control.
Our Demon Slayer Inosuke Swords are the perfect replicas for cosplayers. They’re made of carbon steel and not sharpened, so they’re perfect for cosplayers. Get a pair and display them with pride.
Nice to Have: The Small Details
If you really want to take your cosplaying to the next level, here are some expert tips.
●Focus on the hair
You don’t get to see much of Inosuke’s face, thanks to the boar’s head mask, but when you do, you get to see his straight black hair and bangs.
If you have black hair, you’re in luck. You can just style it like Inosuke. If not, consider straightening and dyeing it.
●Green eyes
Inosuke has green eyes. Again, you don’t see much of his eyes because he’s often behind the mask. But, if you want to pull off Inosuke through-and-through, consider getting a pair of green-colored contacts to wear with your costume.
●Get in shape (or try this hack)
Inosuke’s build is as noticeable as his boar’s head and chipped blades. He’s very thick and muscular.
If you want to pull off the look, start hitting the weights now. For most of us, it’ll take some time to get as cut as Inosuke Hashibira.
However, if you need an assist, a cosplayer pro insider tip is to use makeup to create the appearance of muscle tone. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
